Mozart–Haydn–Rutter
three universities–three choirs–three great choral works
Saturday, December 11 2004
Melbourne's three premier university choirs are joining to present three of
the most delightful pieces of music around. They are coming together to sing
three great choral works from 3 centuries: Mozart's Vesperae solennes de
confessore, Haydn's Te Deum Laudamus and John Rutter's Gloria.
The concert will bring together the voices of Melbourne University Choral Society,
Monash University Choral
Society and RMIT Occasional
Choral Society.
These choirs are all un-auditioned and open to any member of the public to
join. Despite their inclusive nature, the choirs regularly present large
concerts of sophisticated works, such as Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, Handel's
Messiah, as well as contemporary works such as Carl Vine's Choral Symphony.
The works in these concerts are no less sophisticated. They are three
complementary pieces that share a sense of joy and celebration.
The Vesperae solennes de confessore, written by Mozart at the age of 24 for
the Archbishop of Salzburg, blends plainsong with moments of operatic
intensity. Haydn's Te Deum was written at the apogee of his career and
contains moments of almost overwhelming cheerfulness. It was written for
Empress Marie Therese of Austria, of whom Haydn was a close companion.
English composer John Rutter wrote the Gloria, one of his best known pieces,
for the Voices of Mel Olson, of Omaha, and conducted the premier performance
in 1974 during his first visit to America. It remains one of the highest
selling pieces of choral music. The works will be conducted by Andrew Wailes
and Trevor Jones.
The performance will be on Saturday December 11 at 8.30pm at St Mary.s Star
of the Sea, West Melbourne (corner Howard St and Victoria St). Tickets are
$28/$23 concession, and are available through Ticketek online at
www.ticketek.com or by phone on 132 849. (Ticket price includes booking fees
and GST. Handling fees may apply).
